The special view of things: Greg Lynn for Atelier Swarovski
Architect Greg Lynn, known predilection for organic, biomorphic forms that he creates using sophisticated computer technology in his career he worked on the design of almost everything from buildings to furniture and cutlery. He recently joined the list of his achievements of cooperation with the company Swarovski. Once the architect has worked in building installation for Swarovski Crystal Palace in Miami, creative director Nadja Swarovski asked him to create a jewelry collection for Atelier Swarovski. Atelier in general are often attracted to works of famous designers from various fields, from fashion to architecture.
Greg Lynn was interested in the proposal because, according to him, most people usually do not see it working, and even more can not wear them. Even as an experienced designer's work has not been without difficulties. He began by sketching, starting from the shape and color of the crystals, which are intended to be used, and only then began to create digital models of the future jewelry. Says Greg Lynn, its scale is difficult to surprise, but when working on the company Swarovski had to torment him - computer models look so much more of the products that need to happen eventually, that the model should be altered three times to get the correct scale. Thus it was necessary to keep in mind the practical aspects such as, for example, the weight of future rings or shackles.
For his collection Lynn made earrings, bracelets, rings and necklaces of different shapes and colors. An avid sailor, who lives in the Californian city of Venice, Lynn drew inspiration from the contrast of the sandy beaches and the sea surface, as seen in a combination of matt and glossy elements - bone china and crystal. To emphasize the color and shine of crystals, where a porcelain paste in contact with the stone, Lynn edged crystals of silver or gold metal.
Lynn works are dynamic and slightly unbalanced; they want to be viewed from all sides as sculpture, because at each new point of view, they can be a little - or at all - other. Jewellery named after the designer's favorite beaches, and some of them resemble sea inhabitants such as snails and clams. Greg Lynn describes his work as contact geometric crystal faces with smooth organic form jewelry that is a total of elegance with a touch of primitivism in a good way. Looking at these decorations, we can not say with absolute certainty, whether they belong to modern design, and to the work of our very distant ancestors, which the sea is not only to feed but also to inspire creativity.
