The Case of the Diamond Necklace
"The Case of the Diamond Necklace" became a scandal, raised to hate the French Marie Antoinette at an unprecedented level. Napoleon once remarked that "the death of the Queen have to deduct from the case of the Necklace." The case itself, as well as the subsequent memoirs of one of its participants, the Countess de Lamotte, served as the wind that fanned the fire uncontrollable French Revolution.
The story is long, complex and has many different versions and was told many times. Jeanne de Saint-Remy-de-Valois (Countess de Lamotte) stated its royal origins, while talking about her, that she was the origin of the more than modest. She was the mistress of Cardinal de Rohan, a person prone more to the affairs of the earth, rather than spiritual. Cardinal, being out of favor with Marie Antoinette wanted to win her favor. Jeanne de Lamotte, in turn, undertook its own campaign to approach the queen, by which she hoped to "return" allegedly of its property, and the Cardinal persuaded that they can achieve reconciliation.
Cardinal agreed to ensure that the Countess arranged for his correspondence with the Queen. But his letters were never transferred to the recipient, and "answers" the Queen wrote to Jeanne herself, or someone from its environment
The cardinal spoke with the notorious alchemist Count Cagliostro, trusting his predictions. Cagliostro, bribed by the Countess de Lamotte, convinced the Cardinal in the arrangement to his queen, and that in the future it will take a high position in the government. The climax of the story was midnight meeting with the cardinal's "Marie Antoinette", which portrayed a surprisingly similar to her a woman named Olivia Lege, actress, and perhaps a courtesan. Then comes the stage that same necklace. Diamond necklace unusually high value was previously made by the Parisian jewelers for the King's favorite, Madame du Barry. Several times Marie Antoinette tried to interest in buying that necklace, but she refused to buy it. Now jewelers, once on the verge of bankruptcy, asked for help to the Countess, asking her to persuade the Queen to buy a necklace.
Jeanne is requested Cardinal, who had hoped that the negotiations with the Queen to help him win her favor. Cagliostro confirmed that negotiations will bring success to the cardinal. Jewelers necklace passed to Cardinal, and he, in turn, gave it to "trustee" Queen's necklace and then just disappeared.
Diamond scandal
Marie Antoinette learned of the necklace for the first time, when desperate jewelers sent her a bill for a huge sum. There followed a public scandal, the Cardinal was convicted, and Jeanne was arrested. The Queen insisted on the trial of the Cardinal, accusing him that he could imagine that she was capable of any relationship with him. This, of course, played into the hands of numerous enemies of the Queen, who were happy to public disclosure of thoughts about her moral character.
This was followed by a public trial. The cardinal was acquitted, Count Cagliostro was expelled from the country.
Jeanne de Lamotte was condemned, branded and thrown into the Bastille. It has now become a favorite of the Queen's enemies faction, which grew rapidly in France. She managed to flee to London with her husband. There, she immediately set about preparing a plan of revenge queen publishing defamatory Marie Antoinette memoirs largely false, but enjoyed the confidence of many.
In 1791 he published two volumes of memoirs of the Countess, but Joan did not have time to enjoy their success. In early June, London newspapers reported that the bailiffs delivered to her house for debt. Others said that these people were actually undercover agents sent by the Duke of Orleans; exactly considered herself Jeanne. Trying to get away from them, she barricaded in a room, then climbed to the third floor, and fell out of the window into the street. Received serious injuries, she suffered from extreme pain during the hot July and August and 23 August 1791 she died. Queen against which Joan so long intrigued, survived her by only two years, one month and twenty-three days before the climb to the guillotine in Paris under the cheers of the crowd.
